Using TruAssist with SMS Messaging
Officers can access TruAssist from anywhere with the SMS text functionality within the platform
TruAssist isn’t limited to the desktop chat interface—officers can also interact with the assistant via SMS. This capability is ideal when you’re away from your computer yet still need policy answers, call‑history lookups or procedural guidance. By registering your cell number and a four‑digit security PIN, you can text questions to TruAssist and receive responses for a limited time window.
How it works
- Launch the SMS menu – Inside the TruAssist interface, click the SMS icon. The overlay notes that clicking this button opens the SMS menu, allowing you to register your phone.
- Complete phone registration – The Set Phone/PIN to SMS with TruAssist dialog prompts you to enter your cell number, create a four‑digit PIN and grant permission for text messages. After saving, you’ll see the TruAssist SMS number and instructions to send your PIN. Sending the PIN as your first message opens a 30‑minute SMS window.
- Text your questions – Once verified, you can interact with TruAssist by texting policy questions, incident inquiries or other prompts. The assistant responds via SMS, providing call‑history details, policy summaries or guidance based on your message. This workflow is designed for times when you’re away from a computer.
- Extend your access – After the 30‑minute session ends, send your four‑digit PIN again to re‑verify your identity and start a new session. TruAssist will continue responding until the window expires again.
Example scenario
An officer on foot patrol needs guidance on a noise‑complaint call but has no access to a computer. They open the SMS menu in TruAssist, register their phone number and four‑digit PIN, and save the information. From their phone, they text the PIN to the displayed SMS number, opening a 30‑minute window. They then ask, “What does our noise‑ordinance policy say about late‑night complaints?” TruAssist responds with a concise summary of the policy and any citation requirements. When the session expires, the officer re‑sends the PIN to continue the conversation.
Summary
SMS messaging with TruAssist provides a convenient way to interact with the assistant when you’re away from the desktop. By registering your phone number and setting a four‑digit PIN, you can text questions to the TruAssist number and receive policy answers, call‑history lookups and procedural guidance during a 30‑minute session. When the window ends, simply re‑send your PIN to start a new session. This feature ensures officers remain informed and connected even without computer access.
